Semihandmade

Nothing compares to the endless rows of bedding, furniture, and decorative accessories looming over you when you enter into the heaven (and sometimes hell) that is called IKEA. It is hard to find your unique style when everyone and their mother (literally) are stocking their carts with the same Audrey Hepburn canvas wall art, MALM 6-drawer chest, and FLYSTA shelving unit. Thankfully, Semihandmade is here to help you turn that showroom-perfect look into something you can live with because hacking IKEA’s pre-fabricated furniture is their specialty.

The modular packaging affords Semihandmade the flexibility to customize sofas, tables, and cabinets the way their customers truly want. The company was founded by John McDonald, an aspiring screenwriter turned designer, in 2011. What started as a small project is now an intricate operation with 75 employees spread all over production shops in Southern California.

Semihandmade has collaborated with notable designers like Nate Berkus, Sarah Sherman Samuel, Amber Lewis, and Studio McGee and has been featured in popular publications such as Apartment Therapy, Design Milk, and Design Sponge. While 20% of their business comes from contractors, architects, and designers, a whopping 80% of comes from homeowners. This means you don’t have to have years of design experience to design your own home.

Semihandmade makes it easy for the layperson so they can spend more time enjoying those Swedish meatballs and soft serve ice cream.
