Decordots is an interior design and lifestyle blog with a Scandinavian touch. How does your Scandinavian edge differ from other design blogs?
There are quite a lot of blogs out there that are focused on Scandinavian style. I manage to incorporate my own style into the photos I take and share on my blog. I curate material but I think it still reflects what I find inspiring and is in line with my aesthetics.
Where are you located and how has your environment influenced your style?
I live in Estonia, a small country in the northern part of Europe. We have long cold winters during which daylight is really scarce. I think it's one of the reasons why I like to use lots of white while decorating as it really helps to enhance the little light available in those dark periods. I think the tendency to love simple clean aesthetics and subtle color palette are both coded into the DNA of people living in Nordic countries.
Can you describe Nordic style? What sets this apart from its western counterpart?
Nordic style is centered on simplicity, functionality, clean lines, natural materials and muted colors. The use of light is extremely important and we try to get everything out of it through big windows with minimal curtains and light surfaces. I think all of these features combined create a distinct Scandinavian style.
What are the top three online shops you visit to find great items for the home and why?
Finnish Design Shop has a wide selection of furniture and accessories from different Scandinavian designers and brands. Artilleriet and Stillleben both have a perfectly curated selection of different things for the home. There are also many smaller brands represented in the selection and if something is trending in the Scandinavian interior design scene you can be almost sure to find it.
You seem to have mastered the art of minimalism. Can you describe your style secretes?
I try to keep the color palette I use in decorating simple and monochrome; I use shades of grey, black, and white the most. I try to add neutrals, muted hues and wooden tones every now and then to add warmth. Different textures, natural materials, lots of cozy textiles and green plants also find their way in my decorating or styling routine.
